Saint Euphrasia BanYa Literacy and Learning Center

St Euphrasia BanYa Literacy Center, a project of Good Shepherd Phuket

Located in BanYa

September 2016 will mark the grand opening of the Saint Euphrasia BanYa Literacy  and Learning Centre in a new dedicated facility expected to immediately accommodate 190 students. Located in a small village called Baan Ya, the new building is less than half a kilometer from the Saint Euphrasia Learning Center, which opened June 2014 with 60 students.

The BanYa Literacy and Learning Centre is now housed in a new 8 room building. It has been built by the Thai property owner, Khun Tanit with additional funding from a number of individual and club sponsors. Thanks to a recently awarded grant from Rotary International, sufficient funds will be available to raise the level of resources available to enhance this much needed literacy program.

History:  The original Bang Jo school was set up in 2010 by the Rghmonya Labour Union – Operation Learning Center Projects based in Ranong. Parents living in the construction worker camps in Bang Jo, Thalang area requested that a Burmese Learning Center be built so their children could receive equivalent education to that of which they would receive in their home country. The children are taught English, Math, Social Studies, Dance, History, Science and Burmese Reading and Writing. The school began with thirty students and two teachers.

June 2014, the St. Euphrasia Learning Center now called St. Euphrasia BanYa Literacy and Learning Center, was launched in a rental facility to accommodate the 60+ students with four teachers. More than 100 students ranging in age between 4 and 14  will be moved to the new St. Euphrasia BanYa Literacy Center on19 September 2016. There is an approximate 50/50 split between girls and boys.
